18A--Creating a Customer Avatar
I'd like you to describe your prototypical customer in that segment with as much detail as you can. Include pictures, too. Tell us their story! What kind of hobbies does your customer have? What kind of car do they tend to drive? (What color is it?) What TV shows do they watch? Do they have children? Are any of them adopted? What are their favorite books, and who are their favorite politicians? How old are they? How old do they feel? And so on. The richer the detail, the better.
After you have created this customer avatar, I'd like you to answer this final set of questions: What do you have in common with the customer avatar? If you have anything in common with the avatar, do you think that is a coincidence? Why?
I think my prototypical customer is a husband with 15-20 chickens or a small aquacultural operation. They will typically be hobbyist with "real" jobs away from home. Their children will be heavily involved in animal care and the farming portion of their lives is mostly for enjoyment and/or limited economic or nutritional returns. They'll likely have a pickup truck of some kind, potentially a flatbed diesel to haul their horse trailer and pick up feed. There's probably an old Chevrolet pickup with a V8 parked in the yard that may or may not run. They love college football and probably watched the Walking Dead before it died. They're likely conservative and range from 28-75. They probably feel like they're 15 years older than they actually are but enjoy hard work. They derive satisfaction from raising something successfully. They probably wear button downs or t-shirts to work and at home but almost never wear a tie. They likely will be wearing a cowboy hat or baseball cap when I arrive. They probably go to the high school football games on Friday nights. They probably have a couple of children and several dogs. They probably won't be home until after dark during hunting season. They may go to the weekly chicken, goat, and cattle auction down the road. Their family has likely lived near the same plot of land for numerous generations.
What do you have in common with the customer avatar?
I would say I'm fairly similar. I manage a cattle operation so my background is slightly different. I raised chickens and sheep as a kid before I began buying cattle and I'll likely have them again when I build a house.
Why?
I think it's a fairly loose yet common description for people in our area. Our culture is largely agrarian and we like it that way. It is a significant part of our identity. We enjoy doing things on our own and being left alone.
The avatar is almost a parody. Almost (chuckling).

Entrepreneurs have an obsession with solving their customers' needs. But before they can satisfy this obsession, they first have to know who their customers are. That's the objective of this exercise: get to know your customer so you can have a chance to be obsessed about them.

I think this is such a great post! I love the customer profile that you created as well as the image at the end of your post and I agree with your depiction of your customers. I think it will be interesting to see how you are creating this product idea based off of your customer demographic, but overall great job on the post!
ReplyDeleteHey Jerrett!
ReplyDeleteI think your post is very detailed to where I can image your avatar from just your description. I feel like you know your customer so well that you can describe them to the very last detail. I think that this is really a good foundation of how you cater to your customers. Great post this time as always!
